Community is … creating mentally healthy work

Tēnā koutou,

Mental Health Awareness Week is right around the corner (23–29 September). This year it is themed all around “Community is … what we create together”. Fittingly, we are focusing this month on communities of all kinds – especially those we create at work.

We are over halfway through a difficult year, with a never-ending roll of workplaces that are restructuring, reshuffling or re-evaluating business goals. Because of that, we know that more and more people are having to do more with less.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’ve got two free lunchtime sessions to help you cope:

  • Monday 23 September, 12-12.30pm: “Community is … thriving together through uncertainty”
  • Wednesday 25 September, 12-12.30pm: “Community is … building thriving work teams”

To sign up for these free webinars, and to access loads more free resources, check out our website. And - it’s not too late to book in a session for your team during the week. We have psychologist-led sessions ranging in length from 60 minutes to full-day on all sorts of mental health and wellbeing topics – change, resilience, psychological safety, challenging conversations - and more! Get in touch to find out more.

Not sure if training is a good idea? A participant at one of our change sessions certainly thought so: “Lisa from Umbrella ran a two-hour session on mental health ("Thriving in times of Change"), and it was excellent. Everyone from the Umbrella team was great to work with throughout the whole process of organising this session.”

If you’re in the throes of “doing more with less” yourself, you might relate to our latest article on time confetti: Here is why you feel drained after a day of not achieving anything. If this resonates with you and you’re wanting more, we’ve got short training sessions on how to shift the “frantic” and how to maintain focus and wellbeing.

Finally, you can catch us out and about this month – at the Health and Safety Association Conference in Wellington (18-20 September) and with the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum (24 September), where we’re talking about mental wellbeing at work in the current economic environment. You can sign up to the 24 September Forum session for free here.

Until next time, mā te wā,
The Umbrella Team

Community is … building thriving work teams
Wednesday 25 September, 12:00 – 12:30pm

This year has brought no shortage of difficulty for businesses, with many organisations working through restructures, redundancies and reshuffles. Change is difficult and can eat away at team culture and cohesion.

If you’ve found yourself struggling to connect with your team members, or you lead a team that isn’t quite clicking, we invite you to come along to this short, practical lunchtime session with clinical psychologist Dr Dougal Sutherland. Here’s what we’ll be covering:

  • The science behind working to your strengths
  • How to embrace differences (and difficult personalities!) by spotting strengths in others
  • How to develop your strengths-spotting muscle.

After a brief presentation, you will walk away with an action plan to help you lead or contribute to a thriving team at work. Sign up for free using the link below.

If you’re interested in booking a session like this for your team this Mental Health Awareness Week, we offer psychologist-led 60-minute, 90-minute and half-day sessions on building high performing teams, navigating change, and maintaining psychological wellbeing during change.

Here is why you feel drained after a day of not achieving anything

We spend an average of just 47 seconds on any screen before shifting our attention to something else. It then takes on average, around 25 minutes to bring our attention back to a task after an interruption.

Constantly switching between tasks, whether it’s during work or our leisure time, or while connecting with others, makes it difficult for us to really get into the zone or to truly relax. When we try to do too many things at once, this can result in lost productivity, increased likelihood of making mistakes and increased stress, to name just a few of the effects.

Whilst that might be true for some, new research shows that these older workers tend to be more effective in setting clear work and non-work boundaries when working from home and in managing their time
