Tēnā koutou,

Sometimes supporting wellbeing starts with a conversation. Other times, it’s having the right knowledge, tools or support available when it’s needed.

In this edition, we’re getting behind Movember and encouraging more open conversations about men’s mental health. We’re also sharing practical resources and learning opportunities spanning job-search wellbeing, mental health in the workplace and supporting neurodivergent people to thrive at work.

There’s lots to explore, whether you’re looking to support yourself, your team or the wider wellbeing of your workplace. We hope you find something useful to take back to your workplace, your team, or simply into the conversations you have with the people around you.

Until next time, mā te wā

MAKING SPACE FOR BETTER CONVERSATIONS THIS MOVEMBER

This Movember, we’re shining a light on men’s mental health and the conversations that can make a real difference. For many men, expectations around being “tough”, handling things alone or avoiding vulnerability can still make it difficult to speak up when things aren’t going well.

We’ve brought together practical advice and real perspectives on how we can challenge those expectations, check in with the men around us and create workplaces and communities where talking about mental health feels easier. Check out our collection of articles on men's mental health below.

Five ways to have better conversations about men’s mental health this Movember

You don’t need to have all the answers to support someone who might be struggling. Discover five practical ways to start better conversations, listen well and keep the door open for support.

Men’s mental health: “Toughness” redefined

What does it really mean to be a “tough Kiwi bloke”? This personal conversation explores how traditional ideas of toughness can make it harder for men to talk about how they’re feeling, and why openness can be a sign of strength.

Men’s mental health: Q&A with Umbrella CEO Dougal Sutherland

From recognising when someone may be struggling to creating a workplace culture where men feel comfortable speaking up, Dougal Sutherland shares practical advice for supporting men at work and at home.

A conversation with Brad Poulter about men’s health in Aotearoa

Brad Poulter shares his perspective on challenging the “she’ll be right” mentality, encouraging men to take an active role in their wellbeing and making conversations about health part of everyday life.

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE TRAINING

Supporting mental health at work starts with giving people the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to recognise when something isn’t right and know how to respond.

Umbrella’s Mental Health in the Workplace training helps teams and people leaders understand mental health and work-related stress, recognise signs of distress, have compassionate conversations, and consider strategies for protecting their own wellbeing.

With a range of training options available, organisations can build mental health capability at different levels of their workforce and help create an environment where conversations about mental health become easier and support can happen earlier.
