Kia ora,

Welcome to the October Edition of the HealthTech Activator (HTA) Monthly Wrap

A Month of Change and Continuity

October has brought significant announcements from the New Zealand Government, with ripple effects across the research, innovation, and health sectors. The most notable is the creation of Research Funding New Zealand (RFNZ), a new independent agency that will oversee major public research funds, including the Marsden, Endeavour, and Strategic Science Investment Funds. The reform aims to streamline pathways, align funding with four strategic pillars (Economy, Advanced Technology, Environment, and Health & Society), and prioritise research that delivers value for New Zealand.

For the HTA, it is business as usual. We continue to deliver workshops, resources, and expert connections to support innovators nationwide. As New Zealand’s science and innovation system evolves, our mission to de-risk and accelerate healthtech commercialisation remains as vital as ever.

Recognising HealthTech Excellence

The 2025 KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards, held on 22 October at Auckland’s Shed 10, celebrated the researchers and innovators translating world-class science into real-world health outcomes.

A special congratulations goes to the CAR-T Therapy team at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, who received the PwC Breakthrough Project Award for advancing next-generation cancer immunotherapy, a major milestone for New Zealand healthtech and a testament to the power of translational research.

Congratulations to all finalists and collaborators recognised this year for showcasing the strength of New Zealand’s community and improving lives through science-led innovation.

Wishing you a wonderful November and an energising start to summer, and as always, feel free to contact us with any questions or support you might need.
