Welcome to the first harvest report

A mild spring combined with late-season rain has delayed harvest in some areas of Western Australia (WA). Recent weather conditions, including hail, slowed operations and crop maturity, however rainfall has boosted grain fill in parts of the southern region of WA. The return of warmer temperatures and sunny days this week meant many growers were able to get back on the header and continue harvesting late last week.

After months of preparation behind the scenes, and across the CBH supply chain, we are ready to receive what is expected by industry to be another record crop. This season began with a smaller carryover from last year with only two million tonnes (mt) remaining. That figure is expected to decline as shipping continues through October. Since 2020, CBH has expanded its network storage capacity by an impressive 7mt.

This marks the first weekly CBH Australian harvest report for the 2025/26 season, and we look forward to keeping you informed as harvest progresses.

First feed barley delivery from Esperance Zone - 12 October

Regional reports

Western Australia

Harvest is starting slowly across all zones, with Esperance and Kwinana regions leading receivals. Around 3mt have been delivered to date. Recent rainfall has slowed progress but many areas are back harvesting in warm weather.

South Australia

Harvest is underway, but slower than usual due to a later crop development and reliance on spring rainfall. Crops are two to three weeks behind normal timing. Early reports suggest better-than-expected yields in some regions, though progress is uneven across the state.

Canola and barley are the main commodities being received, with small parcels of wheat, as well as the first delivery of lentils at CBH’s Metro Grain Centre.

WA Barley – grade split

The current malt selection rate stands at 17 per cent. We anticipate this rate will improve as the season progresses.

WA Wheat – class split

The main grade received to date is ASW, with a minimum protein content of nine per cent. Limited supply of H2 wheat available, which has a minimum protein level of 11.5 per cent.
