Kia Ora,

Welcome to the August edition of the HealthTech Activator (HTA) Monthly Wrap.

HTA continues to settle into its new home at the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Technology (NZIAT), with a refreshed web address now live: https://hta.nziat.co.nz.

In this edition, we highlight support for healthtech companies including an upcoming quality and regulatory workshop for medical device innovators, practical clinical validation advice, and QMS resources to help strengthen quality systems. You’ll also find upcoming events and recent healthtech news from New Zealand and around the world.

NZIAT launches in Auckland, bringing HTA into New Zealand's advanced technology hub

NZIAT has officially launched in Auckland, becoming New Zealand's fourth Public Research Organisation and the new home of HTA. Based at GridAKL, NZIAT has been established to accelerate the development and commercialisation of advanced technologies, including AI, quantum technologies and advanced materials, while strengthening connections between researchers, industry and investors.

The launch marks a significant step in New Zealand's science, innovation and technology reforms, with strong backing from central and local government. NZIAT has already committed $71 million over seven years to the Future Magnetic and Materials Technologies Platform at Paihau – Robinson Research Institute and is advancing work programmes in quantum technologies and AI. Leaders say the institute will help lift productivity, attract investment and position Auckland as a leading technology and innovation hub in the South Pacific.

The official launch event for NZIAT was held at GridAKL on 21 August.

Build to Scale Spotlight: Clinical Validation

In this Build to Scale spotlight, Julie Jones from Apt Clinical Trials shares practical advice on designing clinical trials that are focused, efficient, and fit for purpose.

Julie explains that effective trial design starts with clarity: knowing what data needs to be collected, why it matters, and how it will answer the research question. By focusing only on the procedures and data points that are truly needed, healthcare companies can reduce complexity, manage costs, and generate stronger evidence.

A well-designed trial also supports better participant experience by avoiding unnecessary procedures and helping studies run as efficiently and ethically as possible.

Watch the video to hear Julie’s insights on designing effective and efficient clinical trials.
