September 2026

CEO's message

Welcome to the September edition of Port of Brisbane News.

Firstly, I want to acknowledge the work of Maritime Safety Queensland and partner agencies who, along with PBPL, supported the rapid and coordinated clean-up operations, shoreline assessments and wildlife response following the fuel oil spill at the Port in early October.

More broadly, there continues to be a significant amount of activity in and around the port. If you would like more information about anything in this edition of Port of Brisbane News, please contact us.

PBPL supports community events

Our PBPL team was out and about across Brisbane’s Bayside in September, connecting with the local community at the Quandamooka Festival and Bayside Spring Festival.

We proudly sponsored the Quandamooka Festival at Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), celebrating culture, music and dance and the importance of caring for Country. At both events, our team had valuable conversations with community members about the proposed Channel Enhancement Project, sharing information and answering questions.

For 50-years, people have shaped the Port of Brisbane

From early days at Fisherman Islands to moments of rare access, community, pride and purpose, the Port’s story has always been about more than infrastructure – it’s about the people who built it, supported it, and continue to keep it moving.

As part of our 50th anniversary series, our third feature shares a small selection of stories from people whose careers, memories and experiences are woven into the Port’s history.

2025/26 Sustainability Report released

This month, we released our 2025/26 Sustainability Report, which reflects PBPL’s commitment to the responsible ongoing growth and development of the Port.

The report outlines the practical steps we’re taking to embed sustainability across our organisation – supporting economic prosperity while enhancing the natural environment and strengthening community partnerships.

Find out more by reading the report or reading our media release.

Channel Enhancement Project

As part of the proposed Channel Enhancement Project (CEP), the Port is exploring a range of environmental initiatives to build on its existing sustainability and rehabilitation programs.

We have a long-term partnership with Healthy Land and Water to reduce sediment entering waterways, protect agricultural land and restore degraded creek systems across South East Queensland. We have also been a strong supporter of OzFish’s Moreton Bay shellfish reef restoration work and have undertaken a range of Moreton Bay studies on habitats and ecology working with local researchers and groups.

Through the CEP, and working with partners, the Port is considering initiatives to build on this track record to support biodiversity, protect important habitats and contribute to the long-term ecological resilience of Moreton Bay.

Supporting UNIQ You

We were proud to be a Bronze sponsor of UNIQ You’s annual International Day of the Girl fundraising breakfast earlier this month.

As a UNIQ You Industry Partner, we’re helping bring educators and industry together so students can see more of what’s possible, including the many opportunities available through STEM. Hearing directly from women working in industry makes those careers more visible, relatable and achievable. The partnership is a key initiative supporting our focus on embracing diversity and promoting equality in the workplace.

At PBPL, we currently have seven ‘Advisors’ who work with UNIQ You to connect directly with schoolgirls in the program, sharing their experiences, guidance and advice and helping to create lasting impact for participants.

Trade

The Port of Brisbane continued to power Queensland’s economy in 2025/26, delivering another year of strong trade volumes and sustainable growth.

Approximately $78.8 billion in international cargo moved through the Port during 2025/26, with trade flowing from around 125 import origins and 140 export destinations worldwide. Total trade reached 38.64 million tonnes including a record 1.74 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent containers).

BICT sets sail on 2026/27 season

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) is looking ahead to another busy year, with 153 ship visits currently scheduled for the 2026/27 season, reinforcing Brisbane's position as one of Australia's leading cruise gateways.

During the 2025/26 cruise season, the BICT welcomed 138 cruise ships and connected travellers with destinations along Queensland's coast, as well as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

The 2026/27 season officially began on 1 October, with the Carnival Encounter making the terminal's first call of the season on Sunday 4 October.

The Forgotten Women chosen as PBPL Employee Charity

We’re delighted to announce The Forgotten Women has been chosen by the Port team as PBPL’s 2026/27 Employee Charity.

Founded by Mangrove Community Homes, The Forgotten Women is a dedicated initiative aimed at providing safe and secure housing for women over 55.

We look forward to working with The Forgotten Women over the next year to raise much needed funds for their important work through initiatives including Containers for Change, scrap metal recycling, chocolate sales, raffles, BBQ’s and employee giving programs.

GRESB 5-Stars

We’re proud to share that PBPL has achieved 100/100 in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Infrastructure Assessment, achieving our seventh consecutive 5-star rating in this globally recognised ESG benchmark. The GRESB framework evaluates and benchmarks ESG performance and sustainability best practices across infrastructure assets worldwide.

This recognition reflects the work of the Port team to further strengthen sustainability across our operations while working with customers and partners to help shape a sustainable and resilient Port of Brisbane for Queensland.
