Marking 50 years
This December marks 50 years since the establishment of the Port of Brisbane Authority and the creation of Port of Brisbane at Fisherman Islands.
What began as a bold decision in the 1970s to create a deepwater port capable of supporting changing global trade, has grown into Queensland’s main trade gateway – facilitating around $73.5 billion in international trade every year, home to more than 80 trade businesses, and supporting more than 10,000 jobs within the precinct.
Over the next six months, we’ll share a collection of stories about the port from the past five decades – the bold ambitions and significant investments by Government, PBPL and our customers, that has driven remarkable innovation and sustainable growth of the Port.

New battery and solar for BICT
We’ve continued to invest in the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, expanding the terminal’s existing solar capacity by 240kW to total more than 1MW and installing a new 1145kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The BESS component was delivered in partnership with Hydro Tasmania and supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) Community Battery Program Round 1.
The BESS installation will provide valuable insights into how battery storage can optimise energy usage for port operations and reduce demand on the grid, benefitting both the Port and the community. Read more on our website.
Channel Enhancement Project
Work is progressing on studies for Port of Brisbane’s Channel Enhancement Project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The Channel Enhancement Project (CEP) team will be holding drop-in information sessions at the following locations during September and October 2026. - Bribie Island
- Redcliffe
- Caloundra
- Redlands
Members of the community are invited to meet members of the Project Team to discuss and learn more about the Project and the EIS process.

The Port of Brisbane will also be supporting the Bayside Spring Festival at George Clayton Park, Manly, in September.
Community Grants
This month, we celebrated our new 2026/27 Community Grant recipients with a morning tea at the Port Office.
Sharing in a total of $100,000, our grant funding is supporting 12 organisations from the Bayside to Somerset Dam who are delivering mental health, housing, youth programs, environmental and cultural awareness initiatives in their local communities.
We’re incredibly proud to support their work and the positive impact they create every day across the region.
More than $1.4 million has been distributed through our Community Grant Program since it was established in 2013, supporting organisations that are helping build stronger, more connected and resilient communities across the region.

Safety Forum draws hundreds
Our 2026 Safety 1 Forum brought together over 200 attendees from the Port community to explore this year’s theme, Safe by Design, with a strong focus on putting people and safety at the centre of how we work each day.
Keynote speakers Matt Hall and Nathan Beves, inspired attendees with powerful insights into strengthening safety culture and systems in high-risk environments.

PBPL has achieved Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) ‘Master Workplace Recognition’, the highest level of recognition awarded by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
Over many years, we’ve committed to fostering a workplace where mental health and wellbeing are prioritised for employees, and this accreditation recognises the strength and maturity of our mental health and wellbeing program.
At PBPL, we have 50 self-nominated employees in our Mental Health & Wellbeing Champion Network, driving awareness, advocacy and support across the organisation. It’s part of our commitment to creating a workplace culture where employees feel supported, valued and empowered to seek help when they need it.
Whyte Island Boat Ramp upgrades
Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is upgrading the Whyte Island Boat Ramp to improve safety, functionality, and access for the local boating community.
The works will involve reconstruction of the existing boat ramp to meet current Department of Transport and Main Roads marine infrastructure design standards, replacement of the existing floating walkway and installation of new piles.
A full temporary closure of the ramp is required during the upgrades. The project commenced in July and is expected to take approximately 12 weeks, weather and conditions permitting.
The nearest public boat ramp is Glenora Street, Wynnum North/Wynnum, about a 10-minute drive away.

A long-term supporter of Brisbane Open House, we opened our doors to support the city-wide event again this year, welcoming hundreds of visitors to the Port Office.
Our customers, Patrick Terminals – Brisbane Autostrad and Svitzer Brisbane Tug Base, also attracted big crowds, curious to learn more about how their operations work. Patrick Terminals and Svitzer also raised funds for Mission to Seafarers Brisbane.
A big thank you to all the volunteers across the Port for making this event so successful.
