December 2025

CEO's message

Welcome to the final edition of Port of Brisbane News for 2025.

It’s peak summer cruise season and on Sunday we celebrated a major milestone at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, welcoming the 500th cruise ship and marking a significant moment for Brisbane’s cruise industry.

Earlier this month, we proudly launched a new Port of Brisbane Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Fund with The University of Queensland, reflecting our commitment to reconciliation and aligning with our Vision 2060 roadmap to design a port that serves future generations.

Please take note of the Christmas closures for the Port Office, Port Central Café, Brisbane
Multimodal Terminal and the Weighbridge. Port Security will continue to operate 24/7.

Finally, I wish you and your loved ones a very safe and happy holiday season.

Trade update

New season winter crops are now being shipped through the Port to global markets, with over 150,000 tonnes of bulk wheat exported to Vietnam and Malaysia between September to November.

Chickpea exports also remain strong, with over 200,000 tonnes shipped in November, mostly bound for Indian markets. These volumes are in line with last year’s elevated demand, when exporters raced to beat India’s tariff deadline in March 2025. The momentum is anticipated to continue, with several bulk chickpea shipments scheduled during December.

BICT celebrates 500th cruise call

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) has welcomed its 500th cruise ship since opening in June 2022, with the Carnival Luminosa in port on Sunday 14 December. The ship’s Captain Adriano Binacchi was joined by PBPL CEO, Neil Stephens, for a cake cutting along with our port team and staff from our cruise partners who have helped make the 500 calls possible.

In just over three years, more than 2.5 million passenger movements have been recorded through the terminal across the 500 ship calls. With over 140 calls expected the 2025/26 season – including nine maiden visits – the BICT continues to play a central role in supporting cruise tourism and economic benefits across the state.

Cruising from the BICT this summer season? Everything you need to know about the BICT, including parking information, can be found on our website.

PBPL and UQ launch new scholarship fund

From 2026, Port of Brisbane and The University of Queensland will provide new support for up to eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with a focus on environmental management and engineering – specialist fields central to the Port’s work.

The Port of Brisbane Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Fund includes a $40,000 commitment from PBPL, dollar-matched by UQ to maximise impact. The Fund is one of the first initiatives under our Here for the Future Fund, aligning with our Vision 2060 roadmap that seeks to design a port serving future generations.

Applications will be managed by UQ, with details available on the UQ website.

SEQH cuts ribbon on new logistics park

South East Queensland Hauliers has officially opened Stage 1 of its new logistics park at
Fisherman Islands – marking a major milestone in its growth and bringing more jobs and economic activity to the Port.

The 2ha site features container hardstand, reefer points and a bespoke office built from converted shipping containers, with plans for further expansion in 2026.

We appreciate the highly collaborative effort by the Port and SEQH teams, alongside Principal Contractor McNab and our delivery partners. Find out more in our media release.

'Bush to Port' race day huge success

We’ve been a proud sponsor of the annual Goondiwindi ‘Bush to Port’ race day and
Community Fireworks event for over a decade, with the weekend a fantastic opportunity for our team to connect with agricultural customers and supply chain partners in the area.

Every year, around 50% of the National Cotton Crop is exported through the Port of Brisbane, so while in town earlier this month, some of our team enjoyed a tour of LDC Macintyre Gin to see how cotton grown and processed in the Border Rivers region makes its way to global markets.

600 Christmas gift bags packed for seafarers

The Port community joined Mission to Seafarers Brisbane Inc and Women's International
Shipping & Trading Association Queensland (WISTA Qld) to pack over 600 Christmas gift bags for the many seafarers who’ll remain on vessels over the Christmas period, helping to keep trade moving.

Globally, The Mission to Seafarers provides essential support to 1.89 million seafarers across more than 200 ports in 50 countries, ensuring they have care and connection while away.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, including our own port team, to lend a hand.

Channel Enhancement Project

The Port of Brisbane is responding to global trends towards larger freight vessels through its Channel Enhancement Project (CEP).

Over the next 18 months, Port of Brisbane will be undertaking the Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS) for the proposed Channel Enhancement Project which will include detailed studies on, but not be limited to, coastal process and modelling, marine ecology, water quality, visual amenity, cultural heritage, economics and social impact assessment.

Project studies will continue throughout 2026. This will include community and industry
workshops and engagements, with findings and reports to inform the draft EIS which is expected to be lodged in mid-2027.

To register your interest in keeping up to date with the preparation of the project’s draft EIS, complete the stakeholder engagement questionnaire here.
