Kia tau te aroha mo te wā,

                        best wishes for the season!

As the year-end draws near, I’m personally celebrating settling into my role as GM of New Zealand Government Procurement. I’m celebrating in part, because of the amazing people I’ve been able to meet in this role during the last 6 months, including many of you.

At nearly every meeting or conference I’ve attended, people are seeking strengthened links within their organisations, with business contacts, exploring the best use of data and new technologies, and looking for efficiencies.

Two of our big projects, delivered in 2025, herald change and will tick many of our collective boxes. Recently launched Procure Connect is a virtual commercial centre for businesses who want to work with government. The platform offers standard best practice, built-in flexibility, security, data insights and greater efficiencies so we’re keen to move as fast as we can in 2026 to share more of its benefits with you.

In October, the Minister for Economic Growth launched the 5th edition of the Government Procurement Rules. The new Rules reflect the Government’s expectations that public money is spent responsibly, efficiently, delivers public services effectively, as well as supporting New Zealand businesses. Feedback we had from users of the Rules helped shape this edition and the feedback we’ve had since October has been incredibly positive.

For now, though I thank you all. Please reach out if we can assist you – or you think you can assist the wider procurement community. We all survive or thrive under the same skies. Have a wonderful summer break, all the best to you and yours. I look forward to the journey next year.

                        Noho ora mai,

                        Michael Alp, General Manager NZGP

                        Journeys with GETS

This is a series of in-depth stories into fascinating projects on GETS.

New Zealand Maritime School (NZMS) has used GETS to deliver a state-of-the-art firefighting training facility.

NZMS is owned and operated by MIT which from next year will join together with Unitec to become the country's largest on campus provider of vocational training.

Unitec and MIT Operations General Manager Dan Brady says GETS was incredibly useful for the project, the creation of a vital facility for learners entering the marine and maritime industries.

The Focus on People in Procurement Q and A: Alyssa Currie and Seán Barnes

Alyssa Currie is the Acting Manager, Procurement and Contracts at Pharmac. She walks us through the intricate world of procurement in the country’s drug buying agency. She touches on what led them to Pharmac, how procurement inside the agency responds when there is a shortage of medication, and what her view is on New Zealand’s greatest contribution to procurement.

                        Procurement Capability Index (PCI) reporting

                        for 2025

The PCI is designed to assess procurement capability across a range of areas such as governance, strategy, planning, sourcing and management.

The PCI is due on 2 March 2026. The Survey Link was emailed to your contact person on 3 November 2025. You can prepare for your PCI by reviewing the questions and information via the link below.

Even non-mandated agencies can complete the PCI. By doing so, you’ll be able to evaluate procurement capability against your peers, and use the results to support decision making within your agency/organisation.

If you’ve got any questions about your PCI, email us.
