MHCV TEAM UPDATE

As we move into the middle of the year and the much colder months, June and July have brought in a period of change, reflection and important developments and wins for MHCV. In this edition, we take a look at the 2026–27 ACT Budget and what it means for mental health carers, share updates on our recent work and engagement activities, and reflect on some significant changes within our team.

This month, we farewell Paul as he returns to clinical mental health practice. We thank him for his dedication, expertise and advocacy during his time with MHCV and wish him every success in his new role. We know he will continue to be a strong champion for carer and family inclusive practice, and his contribution to improving outcomes for mental health carers will continue well beyond his time with our team! We are currently recruiting for this position and are expecting to be back to full resourcing soon.

Inquiry into Men’s Suicide Rates

One of the ways MHCV advocates for mental health carers is by contributing to parliamentary inquiries. These inquiries allow community voices to inform government decision-making and shape future policy, legislation and funding. We provided a written submission into the ACT Legislative Assembly's Inquiry into Men's Suicide Rates and were then invited to appear before the Committee in November to provide evidence. We know that carers multiple risk factors of suicide, including high levels of distress, poorer physical health, financial strain and social isolation, often as a result of their caring responsibilities. We wanted to make sure that these issues and these experiences were heard and not left out of the conversation.

Our advocacy focused on:

  • Better recognition of carers, including a Carers Recognition Card.
  • Update the Mental Health Act so the legislation better recognises and includes carers
  • Increased respite and support for mental health carers.

The Committee's report came out in June and included several positive outcomes for carers. It recommended extending the Carers Recognition Card to mental health carers, recognised carers as a priority group for targeted support, acknowledged the importance of involving carers in discharge planning and aftercare, and highlighted the ongoing challenges carers face in accessing respite. Mental health carers' experiences were also referenced multiple times throughout the report, reinforcing the evidence base for future advocacy.

While we are still awaiting the ACT Government's response to the recommendations, this represents meaningful progress. Reports like this place your experiences on the public record and provide a strong foundation for continued advocacy to improve recognition, inclusion and support for mental health carers. Supporting Carer Recognition in Mental Health Services

Over the past financial year, the Mental Health Consumer and Carer Voice (MHCV) provided feedback on 34 Canberra Health Services (CHS) Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol & Drug Services (MHJHADS) documents, helping to ensure that carers' perspectives and recognition are embedded in policies and procedures.

MHCV has been partnering with MHJHADS by reviewing and providing detailed feedback on a wide range of documents. These contributions play an important role in strengthening governance, improving clarity and communication, and supporting informed decision-making across services. By advocating for carer inclusion and recognition throughout these foundational documents, MHCV is helping to create a more responsive and carer-inclusive mental health system.

Mental Health Carers Voice - Care Navigator

The mental health system can feel hard to navigate, especially when you are supporting someone you care about. The MHCV Navigator website is a practical resource hub designed to help mental health carers find the information they need, when they need them about the ACT Mental Health System. Everymind Launches the Minds Together Program

Everymind has launched the Minds Together program, designed specifically for family, friends, and carers of individuals experiencing suicidal distress or recovering from a suicide attempt.

Through small, in-person group sessions led by trained facilitators, carers can share experiences and gain insights from others who understand their journey.

This program offers practical strategies, personal stories, and evidence-based tools to help carers manage stress, improve communication, and strengthen their coping skills.

Strategic Priority 1: Enhancing recognition and support for mental health carers

Presented an in-service orientation session at the Mental Health, Justice Health, Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) Orientation Day for new staff.

APAG June Meeting - We highlighted the importance of recognising carer burnout, ensuring appropriate safety nets are available for carers, and embedding carers' perspectives in future mental health planning.

Mental Health Carers Voice has partnered with MHJHADS to expand Carer Experience Survey (CES) training and support for staff. This work aims to strengthen staff understanding of the survey, encourage meaningful engagement with carers, and ensure carer feedback continues to inform service improvement across the mental health system.

Strategic Priority 2: Improving the quality and quantity of carers' personal time

MHCV’s social media platforms are actively used by the communications team to share timely, accessible information, increase awareness of key issues, and connect carers with supports, resources, and opportunities for engagement.

Active participation in governance and strategic meetings with key sector partners, including Canberra Health Services Mental Health, Justice Health, Alcohol and Drug Services teams, Capital Health Network, and other ACT mental health peak bodies.

Continued to advocate for the role of carers in governance and service review processes, including Older Persons Mental Health Services Governance Committee

Strategic Priority 3: Equipping mental health carers with capacity and confidence

Participating in sector governance or advisory meetings to advocate for services to recognise mental health carers as partners in care and include them in planning and decision-making.

Mental Health Carers Voice recruited carers to participate in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT (ATODA) Client Journey Pathways Project. Carers with lived experience of supporting someone experiencing both mental health challenges and alcohol or other drug use will share their experiences to help identify gaps in the system and inform more coordinated, person-centred services.

We will soon begin recruiting carers for the Youth Coalition Aftercare Project, offering an opportunity for those who have supported a young person experiencing suicidal distress or following a suicide attempt to share their experiences and help inform service design.

If you would like more information on any of these activities, please don't hesitate to email us at mhcarers@carersact.org.au.
